National History

In the fall semester of 1993, a group of young undergraduate women at the University of Albany, hailing from different cultural backgrounds, came to form strong bonds of friendship. As this group of friends grew closer, they began to develop the idea of forming a sorority. They shared the vision of creating an organization that encompassed the strength of today’s Asian American woman and her potential for making an impact on the world around her.

On February 28, 1994, Sigma Psi Zeta Sorority was formed and on March 23, 1994, the State University of New York at Albany formally recognized the sisterhood. This recognition signified the birth of many firsts. We became first East Coast-based Asian-interest sorority and the first to adopt to combat violence against women as our national philanthropy. Since then, We have established chapters from coast to coast, becoming one of the largest Asian-Interest sororities today.

Upsilon Chapter History

On September 8, 2003, a diverse group of women came together and founded Ambitious Sisters in Action (ASIA). These seven ladies sought to lay the foundation for a lifelong bond of sisterhood between strong, independent women while promoting humanitarian ideals and Asian awareness in the Penn community. As an Interest Group, ASIA strove to achieve the exceptional honor of becoming a part of Sigma Psi Zeta by sponsoring cultural, social, philanthropic, and community service events that advanced their mission.

Achieving success, the Upsilon Chapter was founded on April 18, 2004 under the leadership of the Charter Class. Sigma Psi Zeta was the first officially recognized Asian-interest Greek organization at the University of Pennsylvania. The sorority quickly grew in number and in vision and is currently the largest multicultural Greek organization on campus.

The sisters of the Upsilon Chapter come from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures, and interests. We are proud to say that every single sister is unique and contributes to our sorority in a different way. Our ambition, individuality, and dedication to upholding the values of sisterhood are the common threads that unite us.
